When it comes to happiness, is 10% enough?
I recently read Dan Harris' NYT bestselling book 10% Happier, in which he says that he learned to meditate as a way of controlling his anxiety. He's not religious, and says that he basically adopted a form of Buddhist meditation without the spiritual elements. Harris says that learning to meditate made him "ten percent happier," and that was enough to make his life better.
As I read his book, I kept thinking to myself, "Why you be satisfied with being ten percent happier?"
Psalm 46:10 tells us to, "Be still, and know that I am God." Pure meditators like Harris have latched onto the stillness without the most important piece. Because only in the context of understanding there's something more than the now, this moment, that matters, that there's a much bigger and eternal context to our lives, can we come to know that whatever we're going through now will be made right then.
Harris has it right that frequently getting still and quiet is essential to good mental health. But that only gets you part-way there. About ten percent happier.
Why would you want to settle for that?
